National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 29, 2021

The federal government has declared September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day recognizes the colonial legacy of residential schools, honours Indigenous survivors, and is part of the ongoing reconciliation process, while acknowledging the harm that was done to Indigenous peoples by Canada’s residential schools and the ongoing impacts and intergenerational trauma that are felt by Indigenous communities to this day.

“The BC Government has communicated the importance of honouring a Day for Truth and Reconciliation and has advised all public sector employers, including health service providers in receipt of public funds (VPWAS receives our funding through Island Health), should recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th as a holiday for this year.”

We have been in discussion whether VPWAS should close or not …

We have decided that VPWAS will remain open, with minimal staff, allowing volunteers and those staff who wish to attend Xe xe Smun’ eem-Victoria Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters Ceremony or other event(s), while continuing to do our work in supporting our communities living with HIV/AIDS.
