About the Walk
The Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life takes place in communities all across Canada during the third week of September. It is the largest awareness and fundraising event for HIV/AIDS in Canada. Each event is hosted by a member agency of the Canadian AIDS Society and every cent raised remains in the community to support direct programs and services for people living with HIV in your community. (In Victoria, the Vancouver Island Persons Living with HIV/AIDS Society, VPWAS – www.vpwas.org)
It is estimated that there are more than 71,300 Canadians currently living with HIV/AIDS. There is no cure or vaccine to prevent new infections. HIV/AIDS may not be the death sentence it once was but, “Once you have HIV/AIDS, life gets a lot harder.”
About VPWAS
The Vancouver Island Persons Living with HIV/AIDS Society (VPWAS), founded in 1991, is the only peer based and operated HIV/AIDS organization on Vancouver Island and offers compassionate, peer support, treatment information and education to all persons living with HIV/AIDS as well as prevention services to people in Greater Victoria.
In addition to supporting our mission, we also offer life enhancement activities and a number of programs and services to our membership. Many of these programs and services are prepared and operated by HIV+ member volunteers themselves. With staff support we encourage this as we feel it enables self-empowerment for our members and promotes self-improvement through a healthy lifestyle and outlook on the future. All proceeds and donations go to support these programs and services directly.
VPWAS is registered under the Societies Act of British Columbia as a non-profit agency (number S-31617), and as a registered charity with the Federal Government. Our charitable tax # is 88907 1999 RR0001.
