The Vancouver Island Persons Living with HIV/AIDS Society (VPWAS) is the only peer based HIV/AIDS organization on Vancouver Island, and has been providing peer support and treatment information to persons living with HIV/AIDS for over 20 years.

We are a Social-profit (non-profit), member based organization made up of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and co- infections. A volunteer Board of Directors, all of whom are living with HIV/AIDS, governs our Society. This is to ensure the stability of our grassroots philosophy of ‘By PLHIV for PLHIV’, in keeping with our person-centred support model of service.

Join the Board

A board of directors is a group of people who come together for a common cause. They are people committed to the provision of programs and services for people affected by the issue. In that work, the board has multiple responsibilities:

  •  Providing vision and direction for the Society;
  •  Ensuring that the membership is informed, heard and their needs are met as best is possible;
  •  Ensuring that the financial matters of the Society are well-managed;
  •  Ensuring that the Society has sufficient funds to operate; and
  •  Ensuring that staff and volunteers are supported and supervised in order for the best programs andservices to flourishA board of directors is made up of people. As human beings we all want to contribute the best of what we have toward the people we serve. We also seek to be involved and to create environments that benefit everyone. And we want to feel good about who we are and what we do. We want to be appreciated.In our work, we need to keep in the front of our minds that we are all people, and we all have a stake in our efforts.Interested in joining the board and making a difference for POZ folks living in Victoria and on Vancouver Island?Contact Piotr Burek with a short statement (200 words) explaining why you are seeking a position on the Board of Directors of VPWAS along with a brief resume of experience and accomplishments by July 20, 2015.
